Tactical watches often come equipped with a range of features that are useful in tactical situations, such as a compass, GPS, altimeter, barometer, and thermometer. They may also have a backlight or night vision mode for use in low-light conditions.

History

The history of tactical watches dates back to World War I, when soldiers began wearing wristwatches for the first time. These early watches were simple and utilitarian, designed to tell time and withstand the rigors of trench warfare.

As technology advanced, so did the design and functionality of tactical watches. Today’s tactical watches are equipped with a range of advanced features that make them an essential tool for military personnel, first responders, law enforcement, and outdoor enthusiasts.

In conclusion, tactical watches are much more than just a fashion accessories. Whether you are a soldier, first responder, or outdoor enthusiast, a tactical watch is an essential tool that can help you stay safe and perform your duties with confidence.

Features of Tactical Watches

When it comes to tactical watches, there are several features that make them stand out from regular watches. In this section, I will go over some of the most important features that you should look for when choosing a tactical watch.

Durability

One of the most important features of a tactical watch is its durability. Tactical watches are designed to withstand harsh environments and extreme conditions. They are built to be rugged and sturdy, able to withstand impacts, scratches, and other hazards. Many tactical watches are made with materials such as sapphire, which is scratch-resistant and extremely durable.

Water Resistance

Another important feature of a tactical watch is its water resistance. Many tactical watches are designed to be waterproof, able to withstand being submerged in water for extended periods of time. This is essential for military personnel and outdoor enthusiasts who may be exposed to water during their activities. Look for watches that have a water resistance rating of at least 100 meters.

Shock Resistance

Tactical watches are also designed to be shock resistant. They are built to withstand impacts and vibrations, which is important for soldiers and extreme sports enthusiasts who may be exposed to rough terrain and physical activity. Look for watches that meet military standards for shock resistance.

GPS and Mapping

Many tactical watches come equipped with GPS and mapping features. This is essential for outdoor enthusiasts who need to navigate through unfamiliar terrain. Look for watches that have GLONASS and dual-position GPS for accurate tracking and waypoint projection.

Chronograph and Countdown Timer

Tactical watches often come equipped with a chronograph and countdown timer. This is useful for military personnel and outdoor enthusiasts who need to time their activities. Look for watches that have a tachymeter and a countdown timer.

Compass and Altimeter

Many tactical watches come equipped with a compass and altimeter. This is essential for outdoor enthusiasts who need to navigate through unfamiliar terrain and determine their altitude. Look for watches that have a 3-axis compass and a barometric altimeter.

Tritium Gas Tubes

Tactical watches often come equipped with tritium gas tubes. These tubes provide luminous hands and markers that are visible in darkness and low-light conditions. Look for watches that have tritium gas tubes for easy visibility in any lighting conditions.

Smartwatch Features

Finally, many tactical watches come equipped with smartwatch features. This includes features such as smartphone notifications, fitness tracking, and music control. Look for watches that have Bluetooth connectivity and are compatible with your smartphone.

In summary, tactical watches are built to be reliable, sturdy, and packed with features that are essential for military personnel and outdoor enthusiasts. When choosing a tactical watch, look for features such as durability, water resistance, shock resistance, GPS and mapping, chronograph and countdown timer, compass and altimeter, tritium gas tubes, and smartwatch features.

Purpose

The first thing to consider when choosing a tactical watch is the purpose. Are you looking for a watch that can withstand critical conditions and rough use? Do you need a watch that can help you keep track of time while beating the odds in the field? Or are you looking for a watch that can offer GPS tracking, music, and other features for your outdoor activities?

Budget

Another important factor to consider is your budget. Tactical watches can range from budget tactical watches to high-end luxury watches. It is important to set a budget and stick to it. Consider what features are essential and look for watches that fit your budget.

Style and Design

Style and design are also important factors to consider. Do you prefer a classic look or a modern, high-tech design? Do you want a watch with high visibility or a watch that is discreet? Consider your personal style and preferences when choosing a tactical watch.

Brand and Reputation

Brand and reputation are also important factors to consider. Look for brands with a reputation for quality and durability, such as Luminox, Casio Pro Trek, and Ironman. Consider the materials used in the construction of the watch, such as 316L stainless steel or carbon fiber.

In conclusion, choosing the right tactical watch requires careful consideration of the purpose, budget, style and design, brand and reputation, and other important factors. By taking the time to research and compare different watches, you can find a watch that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations.

Convert Your Watch to a NATO Strap

Here’s a tip you won’t find anywhere else. Some watch enthusiasts really don’t like the rubber straps that come with the typical tactical watch. Instead, they may be better served with a NATO strap. Here’s how you do that.

  • Determine what the lug width is and whether or not there are existing spring bars that can take a NATO strap. If your watch has these bars, you’re in luck, and all you need to do is determine the correct lug width and order the strap. The typical sized lug width for these watches is probably 22mm.
  • If it doesn’t come with a spring bar, you will need an adapter. The best place to order these is eBay. I’ve personally had excellent service from this supplier, but you may want to check around.
  • You’ll also need a spring bar, if not already present, and if you use the Barton quick-release spring bars from Amazon, you won’t need to purchase or use any additional tools.
  • Finally, you’ll need a NATO strap (or two.) I’ve personally purchased from over a dozen suppliers and always come back to the BluShark watch straps, particularly their original straps.
    • The nylon on the original strap is firm enough to provide support for the heaviest of watches, yet thin and comfortable.
    • The color selection is incredible.
    • The tang and buckle are heavy stainless steel and top quality.
    • The tang and tang holes are rectangular. The importance of this is that it doesn’t wear out. With round holes, the typical tang will start to wear the nylon and look ratty after a while.
    • BluShark prices are reasonable and even better when you order in quantity. Also, they often have sales.
    • Finally, they have tons of selections from leather to rubber. BluShark truly is the best, and that’s a recommendation without any affiliation.
  • If you don’t know how to install a NATO strap, Google YouTube as there are a number of quick videos that will teach you how.
